“Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe…Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. And to do so, means we need to drown out the babbling of this world, which means we may need to turn off the television and instead live our lives in freedom. If this sounds like utter foolishness to you then I offer this Scriptural support: If Jesus had to sequester himself from time to time to be along with the Father and to pray and calm his heart before the throne, then so should we. I must say that if we think we are capable of entertaining such mindless tripe then we will assuredly ourselves fall subject to it. Our response as Christians should be to guard our hearts and minds against the stratagems of the enemy. His instruments of war against humanity may have changed over time but his purpose is still the same–to destroy families and foster deeply seated antipathies. The so-called intellectuals and accomplished thinkers of this age are no different from those of antiquity, albeit we’re a bit further along in the ways of technology, but the enemy still lurks in the shadows using the cleverness of humanity to enslave us. If I’m coming across as a prude to you, then I guess I would suggest that you search your own heart and then tell me if I’m in error–because surely what I’m saying is true. We were made for so much more than the filth that we see papered on our television screens–filth that offers us a false narrative, a distortion of reality. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.” (Eccl. “Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. ![]() The verbose ramblings of a world that knows not God and is here today and gone tomorrow hold little for the heart of this man who desires eternity. I would rather calm my mind and my heart and sit before the throne of grace than to indulge in the wayward musings of a world that spirals ever so close to entropy. Well, quite frankly there’s none to be gleaned, because the things of this world are mere rags and rubbish when compared to being still before God. In the midst of all of this morass, we–being spiritual beings–try to shape what we see and hear and make some sort of sense out of it. In addition to all of this, the so-called intellectuals on television offer their human wisdom, which is constantly in a state of flux. We’re bombarded, nay inundated daily with images of a sensual nature along with news stations that paint a dour and drab view of the world. The point that I’m trying to make is that our hearts have become hardened. Most programs included such strong sexual content and language that one might come away from watching it, thinking that well this is the way the world is apparently! Moreover, there are so many opinions being tossed about that it’s hard to parse through them all–to reach some sort of substantive truth. It seemed to me that every single program save for a select few had little to no redemptive value about them. The same could be said of the internet too.Īs I watched, my heart was saddened at the messages being sent. ![]() Television is a stupefying contraption that has somehow had an uncanny ability of determining reality for people. There are so many talking heads and messages being propagated through television that it all bleeds together into one shrill and discordant sound. I was watching television the other day–a deviation from my usual norm–and after aimlessly flipping through the channels a thought struck me. The most quotable one liner of his that stuck with me: “I ain’t got no time for jibber jabber!” I think that is what we need to say to this world and its incessant talking about earthly things. I always liked the A Team, especially B.A.
